But where do you start? I recommend you hone your voice by starting with a blog. Then perhaps moving on to guest blogging and then published articles in periodicals, such as topic-focused magazines and local newspapers.
What can you blog about? Frankly, you can blog on anything. Since my businesses are lifestyle based, this allows me the opportunity to blog on some of the following topics: personal and professional development, self-help, business success, metaphysics, spirituality, health and wellness, beauty, nutrition, travel and leisure, and so much more. I have found that Lessons in Joyful Living allows me the ability to address the Mind, Body, Spirit collective.
Start with what you know. Always, start with what you know. Don’t be afraid of getting a bit personal – people want to get to know you. Remember, less is more. Keep to short, concise paragraphs. This is not the time for lengthy essays. Add visual interest. Photographs help bring people into the experience. And unless you get paid to be an editor, get someone else to read everything you write before you publish it. While thoughts may be clear in your mind, it’s important they’re clear to your reader. And, yes I have an editor. A very good editor.
Below are some blog topics to help get you started:
- Business updates
- Current events and how they relate to your business
- Share your perspective on relevant articles
- Make lists (people love a good “Top 10”)
- Daily tips
- Walk readers through a day in your life
- Write about industry standards and how they can improve
- Tell a story using pictures
- Share inspirational quotes
- Talk about your children, your pets and/or your family
Don’t forget a compelling call to action within every blog. After all, you are running a business.
